Studio Voice In Progress has emerged as a separate research space focused on the aspect of voice as a result of performative and educational activities of Studio Kokyu (The Jerzy Grotowski Institute in Wrocław) and a creative scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (MKiDN) realized by Joanna Kurzyńska in 2018. The voice and its associated tissues have become the subject of questions not only in the context of the art of the actor/performer but of humanity in general, human existence.

The main path of Studio Voice In Progress has become the method "Free Your Voice" by Kristin Linklater, outlining specific steps (through a progression of exercises) towards the re-education of the communication system between thought impulses and the body (voice), leading to actual freedom for the voice user. Freedom of expression of the voice in speech, singing, and all sounds to which a human may be capable. Unrestricted access to emotions and feelings that belong to vocal expression. Based on specific techniques, but also discovering a new key to them each time during regular work sessions, the studio's explorations open up to what is likely an endless road to truth and freedom in the voice.

"I want to hear You, not Your voice" - Iris Warren

The program of the studio includes shorter and longer workshop sessions, master classes with invited teachers, group lessons, and individual lessons. Although the main path of the studio is a research path focused on practices that develop vocal possibilities and their transmission, the research phases are summarized/verified in the performative activity of Joanna Kurzyńska (up to 2023 in events of Studio Kokyu).

O STUDIO

VOICE IN PROGRESS

Joanna Kurzyńska

Joanna Kurzyńska comes from Wrocław. By profession, she is a violinist (Academy of Music K. Lipiński in Wrocław), but she will play anything that needs to be played. She is an actress, vocalist, composer, and a teacher of acting and voice work.

She trained in acting and vocal workshops under the guidance of Polish and foreign educators and practitioners, but she considers Emma Bonnici, Kristin Linklater, and Małgorzata Jaworska-Kaczmarek – her mother – to be her most important teachers. She made her debut in 2000 in the musical "Peter Pan" at the Musical Theatre Roma in Warsaw. She is a co-founder of the Youth Musical Academy in Wrocław, where she has been conducting acting classes and directing performances with her students since 2009. She was awarded the Creative Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, which marked the beginning of her research path, Voice In Progress. Between 2020 and 2021, she collaborated with the SUTARI ensemble.

Associated with the Grotowski Institute from 2017 to 2023 mainly through Studio Kokyu, she co-created a research and workshop line for the Studio with Przemysław Błaszczak, participated in the performance "Halo?" (2018) and "Acting Medea" (2022/23), as well as through her authorship activities in the Studio Voice In Progress, where she conducts research on the source, possibilities, and significance of the human voice, with particular emphasis on the method "Free Your Voice" by Kristin Linklater.

In December 2021, she was awarded the medal "Meritorious for Polish Culture."

In 2023, she obtained the title of Designated Linklater Teacher.
